How the numbers work

Volume is stack height times length times depth. Depth is the piece length in feet times the number of rows. A full cord is 128 cubic feet, so volume divided by 128 gives cords. A face cord is one row 4 feet high and 8 feet long, so its size changes with piece length: 16 inch wood makes a face cord a third of a full cord, and 12 inch wood makes it a quarter.

The price per face cord line converts your full cord price fairly, which is the most common point of confusion between sellers and buyers. Softwood and green wood factors lower the price to reflect less heat per cord and wood that is not ready to burn.

Selling tips

State the stack size in writing, use the word cord only for 128 cubic feet, and say whether wood is seasoned and how long. Many states require a delivery ticket that lists the amount in cords or fractions of a cord.
